Web Lecture, Blog 1, Metaphors & Culture

In the web lecture metaphors and culture, I looked at ideology. “Ideology refers to our assumptions about how things are and how they should be. These are basic, taken-for-granted assumptions about the world that we seldom question.” I learned about this last semester in my communication 101 classes. It’s about certain groups getting privileged over others. I think ideology is very much present in the workplace. It’s when you assume and take things for granted. This could be in your personal life as well.

  1. I would agree that assumptions often prove ineffective in the workplace. I think that assumption lead to misunderstandings and lead to poor work performance. Management especially needs to be able to maintain an unassuming attitude towards employees in order to avoid misunderstandings as well as to give them information to do their job effectively. For example in training people it is best to use direct language and use as few words as possible so that employees first get the core concept of what you are saying and you can fine tune things as they continue on. Direct language allows you to avoid assumptions because you will communicate all necessary information first.

  2. I agree. I think ideology is completely underrated and taken for granted. People do not realize what an impact the ideology of a company can have on a person or employee. Ideology is a Marxist concept that goes deeper than what one is even aware of. Our "assumptions" about how things are or how they should be are set in place by a dominant society, and we unknowingly (sub consciously) follow in accordance just because everyone else is doing it too (hegemony)! When one can recognize or have the guts to speak up and break outside the set "ideology" of any one company or organization is when new ideas are formed.
