Blog 1, Chapter 5

In chapter five I looked at cultural elements on page 128, and focused closely on metaphors. Being a communications major, I have been hearing this term for a while now in my classes. A metaphor to me is an expression where a word or words is/are used outside of their conventional meaning to express a similar topic. It’s a language and thought. I feel in my everyday life I see and use metaphors in my everyday life.

  1. Your post reminded me of how in some movies they use a lot of metaphors to make it more interesting. For example, "The Matrix" is an obvious example of using metaphors instead of 'everyday speech.' To some, 'talking in metaphors' is annoying. Probably because you have to pay more attention to what the other person is saying "As Good As It Gets" and in the movie Jack Nicholson makes a crude comment to a couple 'taking in metaphors.' By the way, if you haven't seen "As Good As It Gets," I highly recommend it. Both of the main characters (Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt) won 'best actor' and 'best actress' for their roles in the film.
